About us

what is

Intercambios PR

Intercambios Puerto Rico is a nongovernmental organization (NGO) that advocates for social integration of marginalized groups –particularly people with problematic use of drugs, people without a home, and sex workers– through programs and activities focused on services, education, advocacy and research.

We aim at reducing harms related to behaviors of risk, from a perspective of support rather than punishment. Ours is a biopsychosocial approach that acknowledges the complexities of living in situations of risk.

Our location

Headquarters are located in Fajardo, and we provide services in the following municipalities: San Juan, Carolina, Loíza, Canóvanas, Río Grande, Luquillo, Ceiba, Naguabo, Humacao, Las Piedras, Juncos, Gurabo y Yabucoa.

Why

The War Against Drugs has had disastrous results. Scientific research and field work have proven the failure of policies that criminalize drug use. This war only reduces the chances of users getting a better life. It is time to change the punitive model for one that favors health, inclusion and human rights.

That is why at Intercambios Puerto Rico we defend the rights of marginalized populations: the rights to health services, housing, and development opportunities for individuals and communities, which make it possible for them to enjoy a dignified life and to contribute to society.

Housing Works

Intercambios Puerto Rico is affiliated to Housing Works,  the largest organization in the US assisting people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS. Housing Works is recognized internationally for fighting for the rights of the communities it serves.
